About Us:
Young Israel of Pittsburgh was founded in 1974 by an energetic collection of students and young families. They created an orthodox minyan known for its humor, family orientation and commitment to Israel. With the dedication and leadership of Rabbi Kehos Weiss, of blessed memory, The Minyan grew into a full-fledged synagogue.
Today’s services are held in an intimate, restored home located in the heart of Squirrel Hill; a neighborhood that has boasted a strong Jewish community for over 80 years. The families belonging to the shul today include individuals of diverse backgrounds and professions. After services each shabbos morning, we enjoy a sit-down Kiddush together, where emphasis is made to meet guests and invite them to our homes for lunch.

About Rabbi Silver:

Rabbi Shimon Silver was born in London, England in 1960. He was educated at Hasmonean Grammar School. After graduating with his ‘O-levels’, he stayed on two more years for his A-levels before attending Gateshead Yeshiva.
At Gateshead, Rabbi Silver studied under, among others, R’ Leib Gurwicz, R’ Leib Lopian, R’ Moshe Schwab, R’ Avrohom Gurwicz and R’ Mattisyahu Salomon, currently mashgiach in Beth Medrash Govoha, Lakewood. In 1982, Rabbi Silver began his studies in Beth Medrash Govoha. He settled there for 3 years after marrying Chani Goldman of Washington Heights, NY in 1983. Rabbi Silver earned his Semicha in 1985 from Beth Medrash Govoha.
Since 1985, Rabbi Silver has served as a founding Kollel fellow at the West Side Kollel in Manhattan, a member of the Kollel in Pittsburgh, Rabbi of Shaare Tefillah (the “Russian Shul”), and Bais Medrash rebbe at the Mesivta of Greater Pittsburgh in White Oak, PA. In 1991 he launched his Halochoscope weekly. This newsletter subsequently became very popular in the Pittsburgh community and nationwide. Although it is currently not being produced, it will probably be revived due to demand.
Rebitzen Chani Silver, nee Goldman, was born in 1963 in Washington Heights, New York. She grew up in the Breuer’s Kehillah, attending Yeshiva Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch through high school graduation. After attending the City University of New York for a short while, studying computer science, Chani then attended the Manchester Bais Yaakov seminary in England. Upon returning to the States, Chani attended COPE Vocational Institute and trained as a computer programmer. She worked as a programmer for the NY board of Education, for a company in Lakewood New Jersey, and as a consultant in New York.
Since moving to Pittsburgh, Chani worked for a software company in Oakland and as a software quality assurance consultant, before her present work as the technology director of Hillel Academy and, now, computer teacher at Yeshiva Achei Temimim as well. For a short while, Rebitzen Silver edited and produced the Pittsburgh Counterpart, a magazine for Jewish Women.
Rabbi and Mrs. Silver currently live in Squirrel Hill with 6 of their children; their oldest daughter is married and lives in Israel.
